Ken Hickson

Ken Hickson is a leading sustainability consultant, strategic communications specialist and author of six books, including “Race for Sustainability”, the first book on sustainability issues and opportunities in Asia.

His working life began in the 1960s as a journalist in New Zealand, where he reported for newspapers, radio and television, and edited magazines. For three years, he was presenter/reporter on the “Science Express” TV programme, including a month-long assignment in the Antarctic to cover research carried out there.

He first came to Singapore in 1983 as a public affairs consultant to Singapore Airlines, which included managing international traffic rights issues, and went on to manage the Singapore Tourism Board’s first international public relations programme. He remained in Singapore for 17 years, establishing a communications consultancy, with clients in the public and private sectors, building a network of clients, offices and associates throughout Asia Pacific.

He has been active with the World Wide Fund for Nature, appointed its honorary representative to Singapore in the early-1990s, was instrumental in getting the international conservation organisation established here and he was appointed a Governor for WWF Australia for 12 years.

He spent ten years in Australia (December 2000-October 2010), consulting, writing and lecturing in communication studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where he was made adjunct Associate Professor and introduced a new course in International Communications, a first for Australia.

He is Chairman and CEO of the Singapore-based consultancy Sustain Ability Showcase Asia (SASA) which he set up in September 2010, carrying out assignments for organisations in the public and private sectors, promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management and sustainable events throughout Asia Pacific.
Leading MNCs have been his clients over the years, including DHL, Bayer, BMW, Intel, Canon, Hitachi, Dairy Farm, Hong Kong Land, Du Pont, Herman Miller, IBM, ICI, Dulux, Jardine Matheson, Keppel, Lockheed Martin, Lufthansa, MasterCard, Samsung, Sime Darby, Tyson and United Airlines.

He is also Singapore chairman for the International Green Purchasing Network, director of ABC Carbon, H2PC Asia, Envizi and Communicate Blue, as well as consultant, mentor and advisor to many other businesses and organisations in the energy, environment and sustainability sectors. He is also an active promoter of the arts and in 2015 started producing in Singapore an e-magazine called the avenue for creative arts.
